Rent-to-own can work, but be careful. A lot of “rent-to-own” listings are either rare, overpriced, or structured in a way that benefits the seller more than the buyer. Since you’re a veteran, I’d first talk to a lender about a VA loan. You may be closer to buying than you think, and a VA loan can sometimes let you buy with no down payment if you qualify. That’s usually cleaner than rent-to-own. To find rent-to-own options, ask a RE/MAX agent to search for sellers who may consider lease-option, owner financing, or delayed closing terms. They can also reach out to expired listings, vacant homes, investor-owned homes, and sellers who are having trouble selling. Those are often better targets than waiting for a public “rent-to-own” listing. Before signing anything, have an attorney review the agreement. You need to know how much of the rent applies to the purchase, whether the option money is refundable, who handles repairs, when you must buy, and what happens if you can’t get financing later.

Rent to own is usually a rare option unless the economy is in serious turmoil. Your best bet would be to speak with a mortgage professional to see what your current options are. Keith Jean-Pierre Managing Principal The Dapper Agents Operations In: NY, NJ, FL & CA

I would suggest you reach out to your local Veteran assistance programs and see if there are any housing programs available. Habitat for Humanity may be of assistance too. "Rent to own" properties are very few in this current real estate market. Popular with the real estate crash of 2008. It was a way for an owner to get someone in their property that was sitting vacant or did not qualify for a mortgage -- and collect rent while putting a little of that rent toward the principle purchase. Sometimes a large deposit was required and the "buyer" would have to outright finance in a few years. The hopes was that the "buyer" would do improvements while living there since it was going to be "theirs" and if they were unable to get traditional financing in the set time frame -- the house would be in better shape and financeable. I was never involved with or heard of a "rent to own" that ended well.
