I know it's risky, but can I buy a home without homeowners insurance? I would want to add it in eventually, but for the first 1-2 years I was hoping to eliminate that cost.

If you are paying cash and purchasing the home outright, this is an option. If you are financing with a mortgage, Home insurance is required to protect the investment of the home for both you and the lender. The lender will require full home insurance.
If you are hoping to buy a house, you likely have a budget in mind. Hopefully, that budget includes fees that come with the process, not just the purchase price. The good news for buyers is that they aren't directly responsible for paying their agent. Agent fees usually fall on the seller.
