It really varies from my understanding for different areas. In Brevard county our board of Realtors have ruled that a room does not have to have a closet to be considered a bedroom but it must have egress ( a window) and a door to make the room a private room.
Varies between markets but typically a full-size window and closet are required.

No, a closet isn’t what makes a room a bedroom.
There’s no universal rule requiring a closet. What matters more is that the room meets basic safety and usability standards.
Most appraisers and agents look for things like proper egress, meaning a window or door you can exit through, enough space for a bed, and access to the rest of the home.
In older or antique homes, it’s very common to see bedrooms without closets, and they’re still counted as bedrooms.
Some buyers may prefer closets, but it doesn’t disqualify the room.
Simple way to think about it.
Safety and function matter more than a closet.
Not always.
A closet is not automatically required for a room to be called a bedroom in many states, especially in older or antique homes.
What matters more is whether the room meets basic safety and livability standards. Things like a proper window for emergency exit, enough size, ceiling height, and legal access.
That said, buyers, appraisers, and local codes don’t always see it the same way. Some markets still expect a closet, even if older homes were built differently.
Simple way to think about it.
In older homes, no closet doesn’t automatically mean it’s not a bedroom. It depends on local code and how the market sees it.
In most areas, a room does not legally have to have a closet to be considered a bedroom. That is a common myth.
What usually matters more is that the room has proper egress, which means a window or door large enough to escape in case of emergency, along with proper heating and minimum size requirements. Local building codes set those standards.
It depends on your local county building codes. In my area, most people THINK you need a closet, but one is NOT required for a room to be a bedroom. In my county, the room has to be a minimum of 70 square feet, have egress back to the main part of the house (without having to go through another bedroom) and outside (if a window, the window has to be at least 5.7 sqft and no more than 44" off the ground). No closet requirement.
