Can I buy a house in America if I live in the UK? If so, what are some general steps that I need to take for the purchase?

Yes you can. You will need to get with a lender, realtor and title company. I would start with the lender in the area you want to buy in. Or, if you plan on paying cash, call a Realtor and discuss it with them. They should know an atty through the title company they use.
