aerospace town with an outsized story, and a market I work regularly **My take on Mojave** Mojave sits at the junction of Highways 14 and 58, about 45 minutes from Ridgecrest, and it punches way above its weight for a town of roughly 4,000 people. It's home to the Mojave Air & Space Port, where Burt Rutan's SpaceShipOne became the first private spacecraft to reach space back in 2004, and it's right next to Edwards Air Force Base. Between the spaceport, Edwards, and the wind energy industry along the ridgelines, this small town sits at the center of what's often called California's "Aerospace Valley." I work this market as part of my broader coverage between Ridgecrest, California City, and the Antelope Valley, and it draws a genuinely unique buyer — aerospace and defense workers, wind energy technicians, and people who want small-town living without giving up proximity to serious high-tech industry. **What a buyer should know before considering Mojave** - **The local economy is tied to aerospace, defense, and energy.** Employers include the spaceport's tenant companies, Edwards AFB, and the wind farms along the surrounding ridgelines. If your work connects to any of these, Mojave makes a lot of practical sense. - **Housing is affordable, with a mix of in-town homes and a large amount of surrounding vacant land.** Single-family home prices commonly run in the $200,000s, and there's substantial land inventory nearby for buyers interested in acreage or off-grid living. - **Highway access is a real advantage.** Highway 14 connects to the Antelope Valley and LA; Highway 58 connects to Bakersfield and the I-5 corridor — genuinely useful for commuters or businesses needing logistics access. - **Schools are limited in options**, with Mojave's local schools serving the immediate area — worth researching specifically if kids are part of the plan. - **It's a working town, not a resort town.** Wind, dust, industrial activity, and aircraft/rocket testing noise are part of daily life here. Some people love the energy of it; others find it stark. - **Vacant land parcels vary enormously in usability.** Utility access, zoning, and road conditions differ a lot between parcels, so due diligence matters if land is part of the plan. **Pros** - Genuinely affordable homes and land - Strong, distinctive local economy tied to aerospace and energy, less dependent on tourism or retail - Good highway access to LA, Bakersfield, and the Antelope Valley - Interesting history and forward-looking industry base **Cons** - Limited school options and small-town amenities - Industrial character isn't for everyone — noise, dust, and working-town feel - Land parcel quality and usability vary significantly - Smaller inventory of finished, move-in-ready homes compared to demand at times **Bottom line** Mojave is a smart choice for buyers connected to aerospace, defense, or energy work, or anyone wanting affordable land with strong highway access between Bakersfield and LA. It's not a lifestyle town in the resort sense, but it has real purpose and a genuinely interesting story behind it. I'm glad to help buyers weigh Mojave against Ridgecrest, California City, or the Antelope Valley to find the right fit. Scott K.
