The town of Felton was established in 1868 on land that was once part of the Zayante Rancho and site of a Native American village. Prior to the Mexican-American War, the area was inhabited by mountain men who built one of California's first distilleries and its inaugural water-powered sawmill. Isaac Graham bought the Rancho, but the government challenged his claim until 1862. In the 1850s, prospectors uncovered gold deposits in the area while picnic parties found the Big Tree redwood grove. When Graham died, he owed $20,000 to his lawyer Edward Stanly, who acquired the Zayante Rancho as repayment. More about Felton: https://www.burrowes.com/felton/
