I don't know if there's a perfect city, but San Angelo checks the boxes for many of us. Traffic is very manageable, which means getting from work to shopping to schools to activities is not as stressful as in the big cities. And San Angelo has a surprising amount of retail for a city of 100,000 people. We also have a commercial airport, university and military base. We're the biggest community in the area, so we're not in the shadow of a larger entity. Healthcare is excellent and schools are good. We're about three hours from Dallas, Austin or San Antonio. We're between the Permian Basin and the Hill Country, and we have commuters heading both directions. Of all the towns in West Central Texas, we might be the most beautiful, with a system of rivers and lakes threaded through the town, and a cultural appreciation for the visual arts.

San Angelo claims to be an oasis - which is true, as a river city amidst decidedly dry country. With a large air force base, thriving university and community college, the town is chockful of culture and things to do. Among the top attractions are historic Fort Concho, the Pop Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Railway Museum, the International Water Lily Collection and Paintbrush Alley. Nightlife is fueling a surge of downtown businesses from vintage retro furniture stores to whiskey-sipping lounges to late-night music venues. Right at 100,000 in population and acting as a regional hub, the city boasts commercial airline service and a surprising amount of national retail presence. Home prices are trending up, but nothing like the eye-popping numbers in Dallas, Austin, Houston and San Antonio. For those wanting some city, but no congestion, this is the ticket. New fiber optic cable is being laced underground across the city, which should entice more work-from-home data crunchers to relocate.
