Running Springs: Living Here, Not Just Visiting I moved up the hill from Redlands, and Running Springs is home for my family. It’s quieter and more down-to-earth than Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear. Here’s what I’d tell any buyer before moving here. The pros Real mountain living, close to the city. Highway 330 gets you down to Highland and Redlands in about 30 to 40 minutes. Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear are easy drives for dining and shopping. Four real seasons. At around 6,000 feet you get snowy winters, mild summers and golden fall days. Recreation at your doorstep. Snow Valley is minutes away for skiing and snowboarding, and Green Valley Lake and the national forest trails are close by. Small-town community. Neighbors know each other, and the pace is slower in the best way. Value. Homes often cost less here than in Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear for similar space and views. The cons, and what to plan for Snow is part of life. Pay attention to the driveway’s slope and which way it faces, budget for snow removal, and keep chains in the car. A level, south-facing driveway is worth a lot. Weekend visitor traffic. On snow days, Highway 18 and 330 can back up with visitors. Locals learn to time their trips. Limited services in town. You’ll find the basics locally, but bigger shopping and most medical care are down the hill or in a neighboring mountain town. Insurance takes homework. Wildfire risk makes homeowners insurance harder to get and more expensive. Get quotes early, before you’re in escrow. Wildlife is your neighbor. Bears, raccoons and coyotes are common, so plan on bear-safe trash habits and secure food storage. My advice: Visit in winter before you buy. If you love it in January, you’ll love it all year.
