Sit down with an agent to understand the buying process, then meet with a lender to get an idea of what you can afford and if you are ready, obtain pre-approval. Then learn about the location you want to live and look at everything you can in that location. Open Houses are a good way to do that so you are ready to find your new home.
Have candid conversations with the listing agent about your goals and expectations. Anyone can place your listing in the MLS, but not everyone is suited to act as a fiduciary on your behalf. Find out if they really sold 50 homes or if they have a team of agents under them whose sales count towards the lead agent. You may discover that the "top" agent really is not the top, and you will be handed off to someone else. You get what you pay for and solid representation on such an important asset is critical. Don't take chances.
