1.  What advice would you give a buyer trying to purchase a home?

Our best advice is to prepare early, understand your priorities, and work with experienced professionals who will protect your interests. Before touring homes, speak with a trusted lender, establish a comfortable budget, and separate your true needs from features that would simply be nice to have.

For buyers around Lake Norman, there may be additional considerations, especially when purchasing waterfront property. Dock permits, shoreline conditions, water depth, septic systems, surveys, and property boundaries can be just as important as the condition of the house itself. We help our clients investigate the complete property so they can make an informed decision rather than an emotional one.

Most importantly, do not feel pressured to buy the wrong home simply because the market feels competitive. A strong offer matters, but so do thoughtful due diligence, careful negotiation, and a clear understanding of the long-term investment.

A home that is priced without considering its condition, location, competition, and distinctive features can lose valuable momentum during its first days on the market.

We encourage sellers to address important repairs, remove distractions, gather relevant property records, and present the home in a way that helps buyers understand both its value and its lifestyle. For Lake Norman waterfront homes, that may include documenting dock permits, septic information, shoreline improvements, surveys, and other features that could affect a buyer’s decision.

Our role is not simply to place a property in the MLS. We create a tailored marketing and negotiation plan, manage the details personally, and position the home to reach qualified buyers locally and through the global Sotheby’s International Realty network.

We have represented buyers and sellers through many different stages of life, including luxury and waterfront clients, relocating families, military families, investors, retirees, move-up buyers, downsizers, estate representatives, and owners of acreage or distinctive properties.

Because our family completed 16 relocations during Vic’s military career, we understand that a move involves much more than choosing a house. It may include a new job, unfamiliar schools, family responsibilities, complicated timing, or a major lifestyle transition. We draw on that personal experience when helping clients move into, out of, or around the Lake Norman and Charlotte areas.

We also work across multiple markets and are licensed in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Our experience includes Lake Norman waterfront estates, luxury homes, new construction, golf-course properties, investment opportunities, and coastal transactions on Hilton Head Island.

One transaction we are especially proud of involved a Lake Norman waterfront home that went under contract at full price within 12 hours of being listed. The successful outcome began well before the listing became active.

We completed detailed research, developed a pricing and marketing strategy, prepared the property for the market, and made sure its waterfront features and lifestyle were presented effectively. Once the home launched, the preparation created immediate interest from the right buyer.

Our path into real estate grew naturally from a lifetime of leadership, service, and relocation. During Vic’s more than 30-year Army career, our family moved 16 times, including several moves during our children’s high school years. Amy managed the personal and practical demands of those transitions while Vic led military organizations and operations around the world.

After Vic’s final active-duty assignment in Saudi Arabia, we faced another relocation ourselves and began searching for a home around Lake Norman. That experience reinforced how important knowledgeable, responsive, and compassionate guidance can be when someone is making a major move.

We discovered that helping people navigate their own real estate decisions was both personally meaningful and professionally rewarding. Real estate allowed us to combine Vic’s strategic leadership and disciplined planning with Amy’s ability to listen, connect, organize, and guide families through change. Those complementary strengths became the foundation of The Petrenko Group.

Vic is a retired United States Army Brigadier General with more than 30 years of leadership experience. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Arizona State University, a Master of Public Administration with an emphasis in organizational effectiveness from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and a Master of Arts in strategy and policy from the Naval War College. That background supports his disciplined approach to planning, negotiation, risk management, and complex transactions.

Amy earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Miami University of Ohio. Her background in education, advocacy, family relocation, and community service strengthens her ability to communicate clearly, anticipate concerns, and guide clients through each step without making the process feel overwhelming.
