I always recommend talking to a lender first. It is truly the first step so you don't waste time looking in the wrong price bracket. Make sure you have a third party inspection. Drive through neighborhoods to find a feel good area you want to focus on.

Clean, clean, clean. The preparation of the home is the most important thing I can recommend. If older, hire an inspector so no surprises happen during the negotiation period.
