I recently sold a beautiful home with 3 acres in the Redwoods, close to town (representing the seller) The story is, that I had worked with a man for about 3 years, he was in his 70's and healthy as a horse! He had lived in Sonora but really wanted to move to Humboldt County CA to be in the forest, have privacy, and some acres of land. He loved that Humboldt County has a much more moderate temperature than other places in California, and is absolutely beautiful with the redwoods, mountains, rivers, and ocean nearby! We looked at properties ALL over Humboldt! It was always an adventure, from Weitchpec to Honeydew to Klammath to Berry Summit! We looked at so many properties, maybe 30? We went into places with no cell service, no GPS, (No realtor signs!!) Up wild gravel unmarked roads, steep and treacherous hills, having to drive back in reverse in my clutch little Toyota Tacoma! There were times when I'd say "Bill, I'm a little worried we won't make it, HOLD ON!" (I was always the driver!) We went into escrow on a property out on Sabertooth Rd Hwy 299, so beautiful, but an old cannabis grow property, where we discovered all kinds of crazy things, met nefarious people, had intense inspections, and ultimately we got out of the contract per his inspection contingency! Then we found this beautiful 400 Acre property in Ferndale CA... and that was an even WILDER experience and escrow! It also had been a previous cannabis grow, the property was facing foreclosure, and there were many challenges we had to face! That was a hard and long escrow! But, he did make the purchase and he loved the property dearly! His plan was to build his dream home overlooking the valley and with the distant ocean view! But, the road going to his property was dirt and gravel, and he had gotten into an accident, during the winter when the road was muddy and slick. He was stuck for over an hour before anyone found him. This was a great scare to him, and he decided that because of his age (At that time 75), he felt he needed to be closer to town, closer to a hospital. So, he called me up and we were at it again! This time looking at properties with privacy and acreage, but smaller parcels, with paved roads and close to town. We found the perfect home and property, right in the redwoods, the neighbors were close by but you couldn't see or hear them! Just about 15 min drive to the main hospital. That escrow went pretty smoothly and we came to a close! Sadly, he passed away about 2 years after this purchase. His nephew inherited the property, who lived out of state, and he knew he couldn't keep the property. He had to sell. When his nephew was with Bill before he passed, they knew he was sick and they were making plans for his estate. Bill had told him, "Please make sure you call Jessika to sell the house"..... The nephew called me and I assisted him not in just selling the house, but assisting with all of his personal belongings, trash removal, landscaping, and cleaning and staging the home for sale. To me, this transaction wasn't just a transaction... It was so much deeper and personal to me. I really felt a connection to Bill! We had spent SO much time together and experienced such serious and extraordinary challenges. I venture to say he felt like my friend... like family. It meant so much to me, I felt so touched, that Bill had even worried to think about me being the one to sell his house when he was gone. Honestly, there aren't words I can find to describe how profound I felt. It took me about a month or more to get the house ready for sale. Since I have my Toyota, I took to doing most of the moving and hauling myself. Each time I was there, I felt that I wanted to do the very best for Bill and his family. To conclude this story, I want to share some of myself personally... This job is not just a job to me. I feel that I am participating in this epic part of people's lives and I am so thankful for every experience with each client I have! Our interactions mean something!
