Start with hiring an agent. Interview them and find the right fit. They should be knowledgeable and committed to serving you and your best interests. You need to know your budget (what you can afford), understand the expectations of the process, and know what's important to you in your next home. Having a team (realtor, lender, title company) that works well together is essential for a seamless home buying experience.
Be careful who you have represent you. The cheapest option is usually cheap for a reason. When you hire the right agent who's a marketing expert, you will net the most from your sale. You can't net the most when you hire an agent that sticks a sign in the yard, puts the home on MLS, and prays that it will sell. They need to be proactive in their marketing efforts to net you the most money to get the most people in the door to see your home. The biggest mistake that sellers make is pricing. It's one of the most important pieces of the process and can cost you more if you price your home too high.

I had one transaction where my clients and I were actually featured on HGTV's House Hunters. They were a wonderful couple with a story that would inspire anyone. Nate had kidney failure and was on the transplant list, while his wife Biz was a busy professional in the education field. They had two children at the time (now three) and were optimistic about life and continuing to do the important things in life. They needed and wanted more space for their boys to play so we got to work finding them the perfect home. When the perfect home came along, we were presented with challenges at the final walkthrough which included delaying closing and negotiating a new roof for the home when defects were discovered that weren't there before. We were able to get a new roof covered and ultimately closed just a few days behind schedule. They now are great friends of mine and I always value the friendships I create while working in this business.
Real estate was never a career I considered when I completed high school. I originally went to college to get into law enforcement, which I did for five years. I then transitioned to the corporate world and worked for Target for a number of years in management before deciding to get my real estate license. My father has been a real estate investor for most of my life and after seeing him be self-employed in the real estate industry, I was ready to take the leap and help others buy & sell real estate which remains as one of the best investments that people can make.
I have personally completed over 250 transactions in my career. I'm a committee member for our state association's professional standards committee which hears cases against other Realtors regarding ethics violations. In addition, I'm also on our state association's forms committee which reviews and changes our association's real estate contracts. My experience on these committees helps my clients have a better understanding of the real estate transaction and how they can be negatively affected financially if they aren't aware of the different roadblocks that a real estate transaction can produce.
